Paradoxes and Potential of AI in Sustainability Communication

The “Sustainability Paradox” has become a major research scheme in using AI to create greener supply chains at the price of the massive energy and water demands of the technology. A novel frontier explores AI’s abilities to impact sustainability communication positively as emergent agent-to-agent communication and corporate climate communication as well as negatively in the form of disinformation, framing, and fact-checking mechanisms designed to verify corporate ESG claims.

This course is designed to focus on AI’s potential in personalizing sustainability content, increasing resource efficiency, and improving communication via ecological chatbots, crisis reporting, and frugal AI adaptable to various demographics and audiences. Course projects will explore sustainability documents from countries and corporations to look for greenwashing, lack of disclosure, false impact calculations and how generative AI processing can impact content creation, hyper-localism and international cooperation.

The course will thus focus on practical tasks regarding AI and sustainability that will help with entry-level positions in companies and the training of one’s own analytical skills.

There will be five meeting dates throughout the semester, which will take place via Zoom.
Course Dates are as follows:
October 21, 2026 --- 14-15.30
November 18, 2026 --- 14-15.30
December 9, 2026 --- 14-15.30
January 6, 2027 --- 14-15.30
January 27, 2027 --- 14-15.30

You have to give a 15-20 minute presentation (50% of the grade) and write an essay analysis (either 8-10 pages for 5 ECTS or 16-20 pages for 10 ECTS). Each will amount to 50 Percent of the Final Grade.

Proposals will be due by the second class session and drafts (approximately half the essay length) should be submitted by the fourth session via StudIP.
